Custom Enclosure: The Architecture of A. Palladio, 1721.

We had the pleasure of making this beautiful enclosure for an amazing book:  The Architecture of A. Palladio, in Four Books, 1721.

Andrea Palladio (11/30/1508 - 08/19/1580), was an Italian architect who to this day is widely considered to be the most influential individual in the history of architecture.

Because the book is about architecture we wanted the tooling design to reflect that, so we designed a cottage style tooling design, mixing in Palladian architectural features.  All of our more complicated tooling designs begin with a sketch laying out the design.  We hand dyed the leather to a color to match the upholstery in the room this enclosure and book will be displayed in.  The box measures 20" x 13", one of the largest enclosures we've made; it practically used a whole calf skin.

The project took 51 hours to complete, with 1,941 individual tool impressions.

1612 Bible: Restoration and Clamshell Enclosure

Before Restoration

Before Restoration

Before and After Restoration.

Before and After Restoration.

We had the pleasure of restoring another rare bible from 1612.  We love having the opportunities of restoring these special pieces of history.  This book was especially fun because of the hand written notes left in the margins.

The leather binding was severely dry and peeling, the endbands were almost completely gone, the endcaps were completely gone, and loose pages were falling out of the book among other issues.  Luckily we were able to save this beautiful book!  Here's a list of how we saved it.

Restoration list (not in any particular order):

  • Leather consolidation and hydration.
  • Internal and external hinge repairs.
  • Rebuilt endcaps.
  • New top endband.
  • Corners built out and consolidated.
  • Edge consolidation and repairs.
  • Tipped in loose pages.
  • Toning all over.
  • Polish.

In addition to restoring this book we thought it would be a good idea to build a clamshell enclosure for it.  Clamshells aren't just beautiful, they provide addition protection for rare books, and they even provide a controlled environment for rare books.  Clamshells are really a good idea for any valuable rare book, in our opinion.

Crossing the Bench: Rebindings, Clamshell Boxes, & Restoration

November and December are a blur in my mind.  I always say time flies, but the last couple of months in 2014 were INSANE!  We're not complaining at all of course; we have the privilege of working with amazing clients and on amazing rare books.  We worked on a first edition of A Christmas Carol, first edition Book of Mormons, awesome dental books from the 1700's and 1800's, and several other amazing rare books.  We made beautiful clamshell boxes for some of these amazing books too!

Here is a peek at some of those projects!

Crossing the Bench: Book Restoration, Re-Bindings, Clamshell Box, and More!

Where is the time going?  August has been a busy month, but we're perfectly happy with that!  Here are some of the projects we've been working on lately!

Remember the photo above Joseph posted on Instagram and Facebook a few weeks ago?  This is a family owned bible, a Dutch Bible.  The family wanted light restoration and a clamshell box.

Here is the bible restored and a beautiful custom clamshell, with our marbled paper on the boards!  The family is going to be happy:  Now they can actually open the bible without it falling apart in their hands.

Here's more of what we've been up to!

We hope you're all having a great weekend!

Make sure you're following us on Instagram and/or Facebook!  We'll be announcing a bunch of giveaways soon and up-dates about our online store re-opening September 23!  Don't miss out, follow us HERE and HERE!

Deluxe Clamshell Box: A gift from Wilford Woodruff to his wife Phebe.

Joseph just finished making a complex clamshell enclosure to hold a letter and a porcelain china box.  The box is beautiful!  The facsimile letter is amazing too, and it looks exactly like the real letter, which is currently at the LDS church archives.
